Former player Ian Chappell has slammed one of the rivals of the Australian team for their dismal batting against spinners in the recent Test series. He called England’s performance against the Pakistan spinners the worst ever. After winning the series opener by an innings and 47 runs in Multan, the England National Cricket Team failed to get going and lost the next two games by 152 runs and 9 wickets.
The visitors failed to reach 300 runs in the last four innings, and Noman Ali and Sajid Khan combined to take 39 of the 40 wickets wickets in the two matches.
“I haven’t seen a team playing spin worse than what England did against Pakistan. They were hopeless. I know Pakistan spinners were good, and the matches were played on turning tracks, but you can’t keep thinking about it. If you listen to English commentators, you will understand why England batters can’t play spinners,” Chapell said on World Wide Sports.
“I want to ask them who decided that reverse sweep was a safer shot than using the feet. It is illogical. When I hear England commentators saying the sweep shot is the way out when the track is helping the spinners, I hit the mute button to shut them up,” he added.
The series defeat against Pakistan was England’s second consecutive defeat in Asia after they went down 1-4 in front of India.
Ian Chappell also questioned Ben Stokes’ captaincy. “It seems Ben Stokes is tired as a captain, and he needs to get back to his old style as he was a good captain whose aim was to win matches from ball one. When I see a skipper giving easy singles to the batters, it drives me crazy.”
In 29 matches, Ben Stokes has led England to 17 wins and 11 losses.
