West Indian cricketer Fabian Allen was recently attacked and robbed at a gunpoint in Johannesburg. The 28-year-old from Jamaica, who is playing for the Paarl Royals franchise in the SA20 league, experienced the horrific incident outside the team hotel.
The robbers had a gun and confronted the West Indies all-rounder near the famous Sandton Sun Hotel and took away his phone, personal belongings and a bag. This could impact the image of the league, with players getting concerned about their safety in South Africa.
The incident has been confirmed by sources connected to the Paarl Royals team, SA20, and Cricket West Indies (CWI). A CWI source revealed that Allen was not harmed. A representative of the West Indies Cricket Board was relieved after speaking to the player.
“Our head coach Andre Coley had a word with Fabian Allen. The contact was established with the help of Obed McCoy, who also plays for Windies. He is doing fine and it is upto Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Paarl Royals to share more details of there are any,” a top CWI official told Cricbuzz.
The Paarl Royals management didn’t reveal any details and even the official spokesperson of the league refused to speak on the matter. He requested everyone to speak to a police officer for any details of the incident.
This is the second time when a security issue has hit the league. The second edition is in its play-off stage. Paarl Royals will compete in the Eliminator on February 7. The final will be played on February 10.
