“We will miss the epic clash between Kohli and Anderson”: Aakash Chopra
Virat Kohli‘s decision to opt out of the remaining Test series against England has sparked disappointment among cricket enthusiasts, with Aakash Chopra expressing concerns that this move might deprive fans of witnessing a potentially epic showdown between Kohli and James Anderson.
On Saturday, February 10, the selectors revealed the Indian squad for the last three Tests against England. Having missed the initial two Tests due to personal reasons, Kohli has chosen to sit out the remaining three matches of the five-game series. Chopra, in a video on his YouTube channel, urged against speculating on the reasons behind Kohli’s absence while acknowledging that the absence of the modern batting maestro might rob fans of the eagerly anticipated duel against Anderson.
“Virat Kohli won’t be playing in the entire series, not just two matches. The reasons are unknown, and let’s refrain from speculating. Unfortunately, we’ll miss witnessing the anticipated clash between Jimmy Anderson and Virat Kohli. But, it’s completely okay,” he said.
Chopra speculated that compelling reasons could be behind Kohli’s decision to miss the entire series.
“There must be compelling reasons, otherwise, Kohli has never skipped an entire series in his career. I recall him being absent from the Australia series after playing the first match, including the pink-ball Test where India was all out for 36, and then he was unavailable for the entire series,” he added.
Chopra emphasized Kohli’s dedication to Test cricket.”He took paternity leave and went home. Never before or after has he taken such an extended break, particularly in Test cricket. While Virat Kohli is a cricket poster boy in all three formats, Test cricket holds a special place in his heart,” he said.
Chopra further suggested that Kohli might have been willing to forego ODIs and T20Is for a break but always had a fervor for playing Test cricket, even against comparatively weaker opponents.
On the potential face-off between Kohli and Anderson in India, Chopra expressed his opinion that the contest wouldn’t have been a fair one.
“Jimmy Anderson would have faced him one last time, but considering Kohli’s batting position at No. 4 and the prevailing conditions, it wouldn’t have been a fair contest”
The cricketer-turned-commentator concluded that the scales would have heavily favoured Kohli, emphasizing that the battle would have been more evenly matched in English conditions.
