Former opener Aakash Chopra has said that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma made a mistake by retiring from Test cricket. He pointed out that competing only in ODIs won’t help the duo.
Kohli and Rohit announced their retirement from T20Is after the 2024 T20 World Cup. They bid adieu to Test cricket just before the Test series against England.
“They said goodbye to the wrong format. They left T20Is after winning the World Cup, but things might have been different had they continued to play Test cricket and retired from ODIs. India played six ODIs in 12 months before the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year,” Chopra said.
“If you play six Tests in a year, it means 30 days of cricket. However, the days remain six in six ODIs. It will be more than 100 days from your last match in IPL to the next ODI you will play. You are not playing and practising at all,” he added.
Aakash Chopra is wondering how Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would keep themselves ready and motivated for the matches. He mentioned that the two batters are unlikely to be a part of first-class cricket as they have retired from Test cricket.
“A three-ODI series will get over in seven to eight days. The next one would be held three months later. The gaps are huge, but if they had continued to play Test cricket instead of ODIs, staying in touch would have been easier.”
