Tynemouth is a charming northern town in Tyne and Wear, England located at the mouth of the River Tyne and is known for its romantic medieval castle which sits on top of a cliff overlooking the North Sea.

This incredible town is known for its three beautiful golden beaches, rugged cliffs, and historic landmarks, with Georgian buildings sitting on the waterfront.

Tynemouth has been described as “Britain’s coolest seaside town” by Time Out due to its fun artistic atmosphere after it made the list of the UK’s top “prettiest and quirkiest” coastal destinations to visit.

It has also been named in the Sunday Times as one of England’s ‘best places to live’ due to its “bohemian vibe and laid-back lifestyle” as the town’s rich history and natural beauty draw artists, writers, and musicians to the area.

What makes Tynemouth such a great place to visit is how easy it is to travel there as there are regular metro trains that are only a 25-minute trip from Newcastle and is around a three-hour train away from London.

Once in Tynemouth, the best place to first visit is the marketplace right next to the train, as with over 150 stalls you will be spoilt for choice.

This dog-friendly market offers mouth-watering street food, fresh local produce, antiques, art, jewelry, plants, and even more. Plus, the market is located in what used to be the old Victorian train station so you can enjoy it no matter the weather.

However, one of the main attractions of the town is the magnificent Tynemouth Castle and Priory, which offers incredible views of the surrounding area and also offers 2000 years of history to discover as it began as an Iron Age settlement.

At the base of the castle is King Edward’s Bay, an award-winning sheltered beach surrounded by cliffs and is known as the best place to relax on in the summer.

There is also Longsands Beach nearby, which is only a 10-minute walk from the metro station, and Long Sands North Beach, which is right next to a family park offering many fun activities and the local aquarium.

One of the most unique places to visit in Tynemouth is the Land of Green Ginger, a converted church that has been turned into a shopping arcade and is described as the town’s “hidden gem” by the Chronicle Live.

Those who enjoy taking a stroll or bike ride in nature should also visit the Tynemouth Lighthouses, three beautiful Victorian lighthouses that are still functioning today and offer beautiful views of the coast and castle.

The best time to visit any seaside town is in the summer, but this is especially true for Tynemouth as it is when the town holds the Mouth of the Tyne festival, a weekend of live music and shows at the castle which will feature Rick Astley this July.

No matter what time of the year you visit Tynemouth there is plenty to do as town is known for its remarkable beauty, rich history, and fun cultural events which makes it worth traveling to at least once.
