UK Foreign Office changes guidance for popular holiday hotspot | Travel News | Travel

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its guidance for a destination that is popular with many British holidaymakers. Hundreds of thousands of people travel to Egypt from the UK each year, and a new alert was issued about the African nation on Wednesday afternoon.

Fresh FCDO advice explains: “Egypt is predominantly an Islamic country. Always respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions. Make sure you do not cause offence, especially during Ramadan or when you visit religious areas.” Ramadan ends this weekend, with Eid el Fitr set to be celebrated in Egypt on Monday, March 31.

Further guidance on Gov.uk reads: “Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country and you should check this before you travel.”

During this time, holidaymakers and other travellers should not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in the daytime, including in cars, play loud music or dance, or swear in public.

People who are currently in or about to visit Egypt are also advised to “check opening hours of shops and restaurants; be aware that if hotels and restaurants are providing food or drink in fasting hours, they may separate you from Islamic guests, for example with screens; follow local dress codes – clothing that does not meet local dress codes may cause more offence at this time; be aware that driving may be erratic, particularly when people are trying to get home at dusk; and be patient and show tolerance”.
