Tunis named one of the best value holiday destinations by experts | Travel News | Travel

Holidays can be expensive, but the chance of getting the best value for money can be increased based on where in the world you go. Luckily, there are plenty of budget-friendly hotspots to choose from with many in easy reach from the UK.

Rachel Davey and Martina Sebova, two “record-breaking travellers” have teamed up with Skyscanner as part of their new Everywhere Agents team. Known for being the first Australian and Slovakian women to travel to every country in the world, the duo accomplished this feat on a daily budget of $50 (approximately £39.30), so they know a thing or two when it comes to getting the most for your money.

When asked where they believe travellers can get “the most bang for your buck”, they pointed to a historic city that can be reached via direct flight from the UK in approximately three hours. They say that Tunis, the capital of and largest city in Tunisia, offers plenty of hidden gems “at affordable prices”.

Though there are certain parts of Tunisia that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) wants against travelling to, Tunis is not one of them. And there is plenty to enjoy in the bustling city.

“Delve into the ancient history of Tunis as you explore the ancient coastal city stronghold of Carthage and wander through the historic core of the Medina via Rue du Pacha -the most beautiful street in the old town,” commented Rach and Martina.

“Discover hidden gems at Souk El Attarine for affordable spices and beauty products.”

The city can be easily explored on foot and is home to an array of beautiful ancient buildings, a captivating blend of of North African and French architecture.

Among its top attractions are the ancient city of Carthage, located just outside of Tunis, where you can find some of the most impressive Roman ruins in the world.

Zitouna Mosque is also another key attraction – the largest mosque in Tunisia which dates back to the eight century.

Tunis also has lots of other ancient sites dotted across the city, all of which can be accessed for a reasonable price. Admission tickets usually cost around TND10, which works out to be just £2.54.

According to flight data pulled by Skyscanner, the average flight price to Tunis starts from £105, though this varies depending on whether you opt for a direct or connecting flight.

Travellers will need to fly into Tunis Carthage, the city’s closest airport. At the time of writing, the only direct flights from the UK to Tunis are with Tunisair and Nouvelair from London.

Alternatively, you can fly with the likes of easyJet and British Airways, with a connecting stop along the way. The airline you choose and the layover destination varies depending on the time of year to fly and which airline provider you opt for.

The number of Tunisia flights tends to be limited during winter, picking up frequency in the busier summer months.

Of course, there are plenty of UK airlines which fly directly to other parts of Tunisia, especially during the summer months. For holidaymakers who are after a beach resort break, easyJet, British Airways, TUI and Jet2 all offer package holiday options.

For example, at the time of writing, easyJet has package holidays to some of Tunisia’s best beach resorts from £320 per person in 2024.

Or, TUI has all-inclusive winter holiday deals to Tunisia starting from £284 per person.

The hotel data pulled by Skycanner also revealed that the average price of one night’s accommodation in the city of Tunis starts from £38. You can use Skyscanner’s hotel price comparison tool to find the best rate on a chosen stay.

Hotel Belvedere Fourati, just a short distance from some Tunis’ top locations, has been ranked the number one hotel in the city by former guests on Tripadvisor. Tripadvisor described the hotel as “an ideal mix of value, comfort and convenience”.

Average one-night stays here start from £97 and include breakfast, which is why it also ranks well on Tripadvisor’s value for money rating.

DAR EL JELD Hotel and Spa, though slightly more expensive on average, made the number two spot for value for money. This small hotel is perfect for those seeking a little luxury on their stay, with one traveller even describing it as the “best hotel in Tunis”.

After a stay in November 2023, traveller Hoang D wrote: “Best hotel in Tunis. The design is stunning. The room is very spacious. The rooftop restaurant and the traditional were both good.”
