Australia defeated India by 3-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, and there were reports of captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir not talking to each other after the batter decided to take a U-turn on his retirement from Test cricket. According to reports, Rohit had decided to call it a day after the Melbourne Test and opted out of the final contest. However, he changed his mind and informed the official broadcasting channel that he was not going anywhere.
Gambhir was surprised by Rohit’s decision as he was expecting the legendary cricketer to leave the longest format. If this was not enough, another report in Dainik Jagran claimed that Gambhir wanted Yashasvi Jaiswal as the team’s new vice-captain, but his request was not accepted by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. The wise men of the selection panel were in favour of Rishabh Pant, who led the team in the past.
However, Rajiv Shukla, the vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has refuted the stories, calling them rubbish. He said that there is no rift between the head coach and the captain, and there is no problem between Gambhir and Agarkar.
“The stories are wrong and there is no rift between captain and coach. All is well between the chairman of selectors (Ajit Agarkar) and coach. This is all rubbish which is being talked about at the moment,” Shukla said.
He also denied that Rohit had told the BCCI that he would continue to lead the side until the selectors find his successor.
“Rohit Sharma is the captain and he didn’t say anything on his successor and his wish to continue as skipper. Failures and success are part and parcel of the game and these phases are not new. He dropped himself from the Playing XI in the fifth Test,” he added.
Shukla also spoke about the review meeting. “Review meeting has been completed and we discussed the way forward.”
