As the weather heats up, so do your travel plans, but this Welsh destination is not one to miss during this upcoming heatwave at the end of the month. While the  UK isn’t known for its tropical weather, warnings have been given about an upcoming heatwave, and this could just be the perfect road trip holiday hotspot.

New Quay is an idyllic town nestled in Ceredigion, close by to the sought-after Cardigan Bay in Wales, and what some are calling one of the UK’s best seaside towns. It just so happens that New Quay took one of the top spots.

It’s a small but mighty town, yet to be taken over by tourists, and so works as the perfect place for a weekend of soaking up the sunshine. And, with three distinctively different beaches, there’s plenty to explore.

The main strip of New Quay’s picturesque Harbour Beach is New Quay’s main beach, lined with charming terraced houses overlooking the water, which is often occupied by kayaks, boats and paddleboards. The town came to prominence after the 19th century, thanks to the building of its stone pier, which helped to increase trading and fishing in the area, which it’s still known for to this day.

Along with it, the harbour is a go-to destination for water activities, suchch as being a popular spot for fishing, sailing, and trips out to sea where you can spot dolphins and seals, both dolphins and seals. In fact, one of the town’s top-rated excursions is the SeaMor Dolphin Watching Boat Trip, which travellers have claimed is “fantastic from start to finish”.

There are plenty of them to choose from, and tourists and locals alike can take to sea for their popular fishing trips if they’re looking for more sea adventures. On the other hand, Traeth Gwyn beach, which is a much more natural alternative, is perfect for dog walks and exploration. While Dolau is the area’s quaint, sheltered beach, just to the west of the vibrant harbour.

The famous poet Dylan Thomas has ties to the blissful town, and it’s thought that he captures its essence within his work. Between 1944 and 1945, the Welsh poet rented a charming cliff-top bungalow with his wife, overlooking the bay. A poem of his, titled Sooner than you can water milk, is an homage to a New Quay pub, and his wife spoke publicly about his love for the town.

Driving to the hidden gem would take just under two and a half hours from the capital city, Cardiff, and roughly an hour and a half from the business of Swansea.
