One London pub, just a stone’s throw away from the Tower of London, has a rather dark theme.

The Hung, Drawn & Quartered located in Tower Hill is themed to one of the most brutal forms of execution, primarily used for cases of High Treason during the medieval and early modern eras.

If sentenced to this horrific capital punishment, the traitor would be fastened to a wooden panel and drawn behind a horse to the place of execution.

He would then be hanged almost to the point of death before being disembowelled, beheaded, and quartered. There remains would then be placed on display in various parts of the country.

It was later changed so that the disembowelment and beheading would occur after death rather than before, and it was finally abolished completely in 1870.

While perhaps a bizarre theme for a pub, the Hung, Drawn & Quartered is certainly in the perfect location for such a theme, being located in Tower Hill, where it’s believed over 100 have been executed.

The hosts of the Beheaded Podcast, a podcast focused on historical executions, recently paid a visit to the Hung Drawn & Quartered, sharing a video on their Instagram page.

They wrote: “Sometimes I think this pub was built just for us [laughing emoji] The Hung, Drawn & Quartered has a theme of just that – one of the most excruciating forms of execution.

“Located just across the street from the Tower of London and Tower Hill, the actual site of execution, you can learn all about the gruesome acts that took place at the very location where you are enjoying your cheeseburger. Details are not for the faint hearted.

“Downstairs on your way to the loo, they have lists of noteworthy people who were sentenced to being hung, drawn and quartered, along with some other very colorful ‘infographics.’

“I don’t think it comes as a surprise that this place easily makes it on my list favorite pubs.”
