This pretty city in the Netherlands is one that people keep missing out on but it’s a top contender for a holiday this summer. Global searches for “Easter holiday” have shot up by 244% over the last three months, as people search for the perfect destination to take time off.

For families looking for a stress-free vacation and minimum hassle, eSIM provider Nomad has predicted the most overcrowded family getaways for Easter and found ‘dupe destinations’ that offer similar scenery and experiences for those seeking relaxation. One swap it suggests is visiting Utrecht instead of Amsterdam – the cities are very similar but there’s way less tourists in Utrecht. The city is nearly identical to the capital of the Netherlands, it has beautiful canals and a friendly neighbourhood feel without some of the more busy major city aspects found in Amsterdam.

One must-do if you plan to visit the area is to see its canals. A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “The canal area of Utrecht is a must visit. Lots of great restaurants & bars to enjoy, very attractive places day or night. Highly recommended.”

Another penned: “As in every Holland city or town, the canals are the magnet. The Canals Area is one of the most attractive in Utrecht. 

“It is full of hustling and bustling restaurants, cafes, old buildings and lovely bridges adorned with bright flowers. Such a pleasure to walk along the canals maze!”

You can get to Utrecht from Amsterdam in a car which takes around 45 minutes, or you can take a train which takes around 20 minutes and costs £7.

Another must visit spot is Dom Tower which is immediately noticeable in the area. The 14th century tower is the heart of the old city centre. 

At 112 metres, it remains the highest church tower in the Netherlands. The Domtoren is open all year round, and the view of Utrecht is worth seeing in every season.

A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Although we did not have time to climb the steps to see the view, we were fortunate to visit right after the construction renovation was completed. 

“Therefore, we were able to see the beautiful tower and also walk through the tour since it was now open. Utrecht is a beautiful place to visit and we enjoyed staying here instead of Amsterdam.”
