The beautiful UK village that looks like the Cotswolds | Travel News | Travel
admin May 29, 2024 ArticleThis hidden gem of a village looks like it belongs in the Cotswolds but is actually located 80 miles away and boasts beautiful thatched houses.
Selworthy is nestled in the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate in Exmoor. The village clusters round the Green overlooking the Vale of Porlock and Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in the West of England.
In Selworthy’s timeless rural landscap sits beautifully preserved whitewashed thatched cottages. One of which is now used by the National Trust as a popular tearoom.
Labelled ‘one of the best tea rooms in England’ Periwinkle Cottage Tea Room is quintessentially British offering traditional afternoon tea.
One reviewer said: “A thatched cottage in Selworthy. Great location. Friendly staff and a nice selection of cakes. I dropped in for a tea but the victoria sponge caught my attention so that was added to the order. All very well done and with great views.”
Other treats on the menu are sandwiches, slices of cake and homemade lemonade – a real thirst quencher.
It’s also seeping in history with All Saints Church dating back to the 15th century with a 14th century tower and is Grade I listed.
The picturesque church stands as a Selworthy beacon on the hills of Exmoor and is known for it’s distinctive white appearance protecting its ancient stones from the harsh coastal weather.
The church invites people to enjoy “peace, quiet and the best view on Exmoor”.
All Saints is part of the Porlock Pilgrim’s Trail, a 29 mile long walk that links nine of Exmoor’s churches and chapels. This route can be walked in two loops, each 15 miles long.
There is a Pilgrim’s Trail ink stamp in each church and chapel to easily record your walking progress.
Surrounded by dense woodland, outdoorsy and adventure loving families will adore their time in Selworthy.
The village is home to the Selworthy and Bury Castle Wall. This three mile circular walk begins with a steady climb from Selworthy village up to the highest point at Selworthy Beacon. Along the trail you will discover an Iron Age enclosure known as Bury Castle.
This pristine village also offers plenty of accomodation options, from traditional lodges to bed and breakfasts.
Living in Selworthy does not come cheap – properties in the area have an average price of £349,431 over the last year which compares to a UK average of £282,000.
