Those searching for their next authentic Italian getaway need not look any further than at Polignano a Mare.

This stunning Italian spot is found nestled along the coast of the Valle d’Itria and is dramatically perched atop a 20-metre-high limestone cliff. 

The ancient town dates back to the 4th century BC, and is filled with unique natural beauty mixed with modern-day charm.

Its labyrinthine old town, historical richness, and crystal-clear waters have seen this spot grow in popularity over the years, and it’s easy to see why.

Polignano a Mare is so beautiful, in fact, that one of its visitors believe it “should be on everyone’s travel bucket list”.

Polignano a Mare has been described as being an area of Italy which feels far more authentic than many other areas such as the Amalfi coast, popular with tourists.

In an analysis of the small town they visited, social media user @CharmOfCulture wrote on X about Polignano a Mare, saying it’s “a really cool new town and one of the most picturesque beaches in the world”.

The user added: “It also has a nearby train station that makes it easy to explore the rest of Puglia with the great restaurants.

Alongside having “one of the best atmospheres in Italy” the user added that “Polignano a Mare should be on everyone’s travel list when visiting Southern Italy”.

Its main square is known as Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, and it’s where most of the locals congregate. It’s home to a number of inviting cafes and restaurants including a small cathedral to explore.

After exploring the old town, a trip to Polignano a Mare’s beaches is highly recommended.

Here you will be met with scenes of dramatic, rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters and pebble-based coves. 

Its most famous beach is Lama Monachile Beach, which has been described as a picturesque spot that perfectly combines natural beauty with unique geological features that set it apart from many other beaches.

This Italian spot also boasts a fascinating history, as the area of Polignano a Mare has been settled since prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological excavations.

Polignano a Mare is famous for three things, which include its cliff diving, epic ice creams and singer Domenico Modugno, who wrote the international classical hit Volare (originally titled Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu)

Today, you can view Mr Modugno’s statue in a square near the coastline and stands as a testament to how proud the locals are of him. 

Activities in Polignano a Mare include boat trips, sunbathing and hiking with a visit to the ancient Roman bridge of Ponte Borbonico su Lama Monachile and tucking into the region’s mouth watering Italian dishes including Orecchiette with turnip tops.
