Rishabh Pant may face sanctions following his heated confrontation with umpire Paul Reiffel on Day 3 of the first Test against England in Leeds. The altercation occurred after Harry Brook’s boundary off Mohammed Siraj. Unhappy with the ball’s condition, Pant asked for it to be inspected. Although Reiffel found no issue with the ball, Pant, frustrated, tossed it to the ground and stormed off. The crowd at Headingley responded with boos.
Rishabh Pant could potentially face charges under two provisions of the ICC Code of Conduct following his altercation with umpire Paul Reiffel. The India vice-captain is at risk of violating a section that deals with “dissent towards an umpire’s decision during an international match.” Specifically, Pant may be charged under clause (a) for displaying “excessive, obvious disappointment” with the umpire’s ruling and clause (h) for “arguing or engaging in a prolonged discussion” regarding the decision.
Furthermore, Pant seems to have breached Article 2.9, which covers “throwing a ball or any other cricketing equipment, such as a water bottle, in an inappropriate or dangerous manner at or near any player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee, or third party during an international match.”
It is worth mentioning that India had already requested several inspections of the ball, with Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah seen conversing with the umpire multiple times during the match. As Day 3 concluded, India finished on 90/2, leading by 96 runs in Leeds.
