Ravichandran Ashwin is the legend of the game. He has passed the 500-wicket mark, 3000-run mark in Test cricket. He has donned several hats over the years but captaincy is not one of them. The veteran is currently playing in his 99th Test and will complete a century of red-ball matches when India take on England in the fifth and final game in Dharamshala.
Former India player Sunil Gavaskar wants Rohit Sharma to let Ashwin lead the team onto the field in the Dharamsala Test against the Ben Stokes-led team.
“India win in Ranchi and you go to Dharamsala. I hope that Rohit allows you to lead the team onto the field in your 100th Test match. That will be a wonderful gesture for all that you have done for the India cricket,” Sunil Gavaskar said after stumps on Day 3.
Gavaskar wanted R Ashwin to be appointed Team India’s Test captain when Virat Kohli stepped down from the post.
Ashwin refused to get into the debate.
“Sunny bhai, you’re being too generous. Thank you so much. I don’t expect anything. I have passed all such ambitions and I am enjoying every moment of my career. I am happy to be a part of this team and the longer my stint lasts, I will be happy,” responded Ravichandran Ashwin.
