In the opening match of the India vs England Test series, Shubman Gill faced sharp criticism from Sunil Gavaskar for his untimely dismissal. Gavaskar did not mince his words as he expressed disappointment with Gill’s performance during the first Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
Having displayed commendable resilience on Day 2, Shubman Gill faltered with a poorly executed shot. Despite successfully navigating the challenges of the initial hour on the second day, Gill let his guard down and threw away his wicket. Hartley offered a slow ball right to Gill’s pads. Gill lunged with a weak swat, not trying to hit it for a six or even rotate the strike. He missed completely, and the ball popped up. The fielder at mid-wicket easily caught it. Gill walked off, out.
Debutant England spinner Tom Hartley claimed Gill as his maiden Test wicket in the 35th over’s fifth ball. Gill went for a wild swing, aiming to flick the ball in the air.
Expressing his disappointment in the commentary, Gavaskar questioned the rationale behind Gill’s shot selection.
“What was he attempting with that shot? It’s understandable if he aimed to hit it in the air. It rather turned out to be a poorly executed on-drive. After putting in the hard work, he played a shot like that,” Gavaskar said on commentary.
Gill’s strike rate further becomes a point of scrutiny as he has had the worst so far in the opening Test scoring 23 runs off 66 balls.
