“Such a wicket-keeper was never born”: Azharuddin lauds Team India’s legendary player

Former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin lauded wicket-keeper batter Syed Kirmani as the number one in the world, highlighting his contributions in the 1983 World Cup win and his brilliant performance behind the stumps against spinners. Azhar, who represented India in 334 ODIs and 99 Tests, attended the launch of Kirmani’s autobiography, titled Stumped.
“He is the number one wicket-keeper in the world. Such a wicket-keeper was never born. He was magnificent behind the stumps with four spinners. He took good catches in the 1983 World Cup,” Azhar told ANI.
“When Kapil Dev scored 175 against Zimbabwe, he amassed a crucial 24 runs. I am happy to attend the event and may god give him a long life. People should read his book and enjoy,” he added.
Kirmani was a part of 88 Tests and 49 ODIs. In Tests, he accumulated 2,759 runs in 124 innings at an average of 27.04, laced with two hundreds and 12 half-centuries. He took 160 catches and managed 38 stumpings. In 49 one-day internationals, Kirmani posted 373 runs in 31 innings at an average of 20.72, with a highest score of 48 not out. He took 27 catches and was involved in nine stumpings.
He was the second-best wicket-keeper in the 1983 World Cup, with 12 catches and two stumpings. West Indies’ Jeff Dujon (15 catches and a stumping) took the number one spot.
Azharuddin told the young wicket-keepers to learn from Kirmani. He also heaped praise on Mohammed Siraj for his 23 wickets in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
“I met Siraj and congratulated him for his bowling. I hope he continues to grow and perform well,” Azharuddin concluded.
