Stunning Greek island is one of world’s ‘most welcoming’ | Travel News | Travel

With roughly 6,000 islands and islets – of which 227 are inhabited – there is certainly a huge number of Greek islands to choose from. However, not all of them now warmly welcome visitors as they struggle to balance mass tourism with their economic needs.

One stunning island, however, has set itself apart from other destinations, having recently been voted as the second-most welcoming destination in the world, and the top destination in Europe, according to Booking.com.

Branded as a “quiet paradise” in comparison to its busy neighbours in the Cyclades, Syros has long remained an under-the-radar island, despite boasting stunning architecture, beautiful beaches and a laid-back atmosphere that has long since vanished on many of Greece’s islands. 

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk last year, travel expert and the Founder of Breathing Travel Carolin Pilligrath said: “Santorini is another destination feeling the strain of overtourism.

“As picturesque as it appears in the photos, the island’s narrow streets and stunning viewpoints can become overwhelmingly crowded, especially during peak season.” 

Syros, on the other hand, feels like a world away from Santorini. 

Pilligrath said: “Unlike its busier neighbours, Syros offers a more authentic Greek experience with its beautiful beaches and neoclassical architecture.

“I spent a few days here wandering the cobblestone streets, enjoying the local tavernas, and it was a delightful escape from the crowds.”

Syros has a long history dating back over three thousand years, resulting in a huge mix of different architectural structures and government buildings in the capital, Ermoupoli. 

Syros has French, Venetian and Ottoman influences. The island came under Ottoman rule in 1522, but it was awarded substantial religious, economic and cultural freedom.

The medieval hilltop town of Ano Syros, which stands above the capital, is a must-visit spot, whose original residents chose this hard-to-reach location to protect themselves from the regularly occurring pirate raids that threatened the island. Here you can find the historic Church of St. George, the incredible Catholic structure that sits at the town’s summit.

The Archaeological Museum of Ermoupoli – housed in the iconic Neoclassical town hall building – is one of the oldest museums in Greece. There is also the Ermoupoli Industrial Museum, where among other exhibits one can learn about Syros’ contribution to the world’s first electric cars.

In Ermoupoli, one can admire the many mansions which once belonged to the town’s merchants. A wealthy island due to its great location for trade, Syros was badly affected during World War Two and the years afterwards. Now though, it has been carefully brought back to life. 

Having wandered the streets of the capital, visitors can also enjoy local food and drinks at tavernas that remain open throughout the year. What’s more, the island’s beaches, including  those in Galissas and Kini, also provide good spots to relax even in peak season.

The Brazilian city of Arraial d’Ajuda, famed for its azure blue beaches, was voted as the top welcoming destination. Following Syros is Viana do Castelo, Portugal (third); Daylesford, Australia (fourth); and Grindelwald, Switzerland (fifth).

Booking.com explained that it based its awards on more than 309 million verified customer reviews which evaluate the hospitality, service and standards of travel accommodation, activities and transport purveyors.

“The list of the Most Welcoming Places on Earth showcases a vast range of destinations from across the globe,” the website said. “From enchanting coastal towns to alpine retreats and even rustic desert gems, all these locations are sure to ignite a sense of wanderlust for the year ahead.”
