India will travel to England for a five-match Test series next month. However, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have announced their retirement from the format, and now the selectors will pick a new captain. Shubman Gill is leading the race, and former head coach Ravi Shastri voted in favour of the young 25-year-old batter.
“He is playing the bowlers in the Indian Premier League, which is a four-over cricket. Gill will now face the test of 10-15 overs. You don’t want to put him under pressure,” Ravi Shastri said on the ICC review. “You groom somebody, and I feel Shubman Gill is looking good. Give him a chance as he is 25-26 years of age. Give him time,” he mentioned.
“Rishabh Pant is also there. These two are the ones as they are young and will play for another decade. Let them learn,” Shastri added.
“Pant and Gill are leading franchises in the Indian Premier League and they are experienced as captains and that will make a lot of difference. Shubman Gill looks calm and composed and he has all the qualities.”
However, Jasprit Bumrah was impressive in Australia. Shastri acknowledged that Bumrah might have been a preferred candidate, but he recently returned from a long layoff.
“Jasprit would have been best candidate after Australia. But I don’t want Bumrah to become a skipper and then you lose him as a bowler. He will have to manage his workload. He just returned from a serious back injury,” Shastri concluded.
