Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria said that Shubman Gill is a better batter than Babar Azam. Kaneria was asked to pick one between Gill and Babar, and the Indian player was chosen. For the record, Azam has been playing for a long time, while Shubman is still relatively new to the sport.
Babar has been battling poor form across formats for the last year. The right-handed managed 64 runs in the two-Test series against Bangladesh. He failed to impress in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 earlier.
In the Test series against Australia, the 29-year-old was a walking wicket. He competed in the five T20Is against New Zealand but was again found wanting.
Former players have urged him to take a break to regain his form. On the other hand, Gill is India’s new vice-captain in white-ball cricket. Although he wasn’t included in the team for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the selectors feel Gill is a future captain. He was at his best in five Tests against England.
“Shubman Gill is a class batter and looks good while batting. You can’t trust Babar, as he can throw away his wicket anytime. He is not consistent.
“Shubman Gill hits spinners by charging down the track. Babar keeps looking at the deliveries bowled by spinners, and by the time he can read their lengths, his knocks end,” Danish Kaneria told Sushant Mehta.
Gill is currently leading India A in the Duleep Trophy 2024 and will return to the Indian National Cricket Team for the two-Test series against Bangladesh.
Babar will next play in three red-ball matches against England at home.
