“Shubman Gill couldn’t score runs”:- Stuart Broad drops truth bomb on Gujarat’s defeat against Punjab

Gujarat Titans lost a close match against Punjab Kings in their third home game at Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday, April 4. After winning their previous two games against Mumbai and Hyderabad, Ahmedabad became a stronghold for GT. However, Punjab breached their fort by chasing down 200 runs with just 3 wickets and 1 ball remaining. With the captain scoring 89* off 48 balls, Shubman Gill’s performance was the bright spot for GT.

After the game, former England cricketer Stuart Broad commented that Gujarat likely would have won if Shubman Gill had faced more than 48 balls. Broad felt Gujarat would have scored more runs if Gill had not been starved of strike early and late in the innings, which could have led his franchise to victory.

The defeat upset the IPL 2022 champions, who were set to win three straight matches at home.

“He struck some fabulous shots, including an excellent straight drive for six off Rabada. It was a textbook stroke. However, I believe the Titans would have won if Shubman Gill had faced 60 balls instead of 48. Despite scoring 89 runs, Gill did not get enough strike in the powerplay or the death overs.” Broad stated this on the Star Sports broadcast.

Broad praised the batter for demonstrating maturity and said this innings would be hugely impactful for Shubman, who had struggled with the bat in the last three matches.

“However, he is a high-quality player, and captaining a franchise at a young age while taking on huge responsibility will mean a great deal to him,” Broad added.

“Although he did not score 100 runs, he led from the front and set a solid total of 200 in the T20 game. While it was not a match-winning score, reaching 200 runs in a T20 match is always impressive.” Broad concluded.

GT will travel to Lucknow to play their next game against LSG on April 7.
