Sanjay Bangar revealed that he spoke to Virat Kohli about the reasons behind his retirement from Test cricket. According to him, Virat was firm on his decision. On May 12, Kohli bid adieu to the longest format of the game after playing 123 matches and accumulating 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85.
Kohli hit 30 centuries and 31 fifties over the course of his career. The former Indian batting coach, Bangar, who has a close relationship with Kohli, even trained him before the Champions Trophy. Bangar said that it was a sad moment for him when Kohli revealed his decision and praised him as a true giant of his era.
Bangar believes that Kohli could have continued playing Test cricket for a few more years. He urged the fans to respect Kohli’s decision.
“It was a sad day for me personally. He was a giant of his era. I attempted to persuade him, pointing out that he still had some strong years of Test cricket ahead. However, he was resolute in his decision. We must respect his decision,” Bangar said.
In India, it’s often hard to move on, but Kohli chose the right time to step away.
