“Rohit Sharma’s legacy is not two ICC titles and five IPL trophies”: R Ashwin comes out with biggest verdict on India captain
R Ashwin has lauded India captain Rohit Sharma for his legacy as a batter in white-ball cricket. Rohit has led India to two global titles in the last eight months. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, while the team thumped New Zealand in the summit clash of the Champions Trophy 2025.
The right-handed batter is giving the team attacking starts after the semifinal defeat against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
In the final against the Kiwis, he scored 76 runs off 83 balls in a tricky run chase. His sixes and fours put the rivals on the back foot. Ashwin, who played Test cricket under Rohit’s leadership, talked about the captaincy of the 37-year-old.
“He is leading from the front since the semifinal lost to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup. If a captain is taking the risks, the players know what they need to do for the team,” Ravichandran Ashwin said.
The veteran spinner said Rohit’s legacy is not the two ICC titles or the five IPL trophies with Mumbai Indians but the change in his batting approach in white-ball formats at the top.
“Rohit’s biggest legacy is not the success in the tournaments. He led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles and recently India won two back-to-back ICC titles under his captaincy. That is not his legacy. Rohit Sharma has changed the batting approach of the Indian team in white-ball cricket. That is his biggest legacy,” he added.
Ashwin highlighted that the openers were earlier told to score big without getting out, but Rohit has added the fearless style to the template.
“He is a legend in the fifty-over format. he has changed the batting style in ODI cricket. Earlier, the importance was given to scoring big and remaining not out but Rohit doesn’t believe in this process and added his own style,” he mentioned.
Ashwin wants the young players to follow Rohit Sharma in the white-ball cricket to become successful.
