Rohit Sharma out, Hardik Pandya in: Sunil Gavaskar backs MI’s decision
Former Indian opener and legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his support for the decision of the Mumbai Indians (MI) to appoint Hardik Pandya as their new captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. Gavaskar believes that the franchise had the team’s future in mind when making this decision.
Mumbai Indians have received severe backlash from fans on social media after it decided to sack Rohit Sharma of captaincy. In a discussion with Star Sports Gavaskar emphasized Rohit’s growing age and need for a young captain.
“They’ve consistently considered the franchise’s future. Rohit Sharma, at 36, manages significant pressure as India’s captain across all formats. To ease his load, they aim to shift some responsibilities to the younger Hardik Pandya,” he said.
Gavaskar also emphasized that with no pressure of captaincy, Rohit Sharma can be dangerous at the top of the order for MI. He feels that if the veteran opener can get Mumbai off to quickfire starts, they have the batting line-up to post mammoth totals.
“Granting captaincy to Hardik will be advantageous for the Mumbai Indians. This move allows Rohit the freedom to express himself at the top of the order. With Hardik positioned at No.3 or No.5, they can consistently achieve 200-plus totals,” he added.
