Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul is all set to return for his franchise from the first IPL game after getting clearance from the National Cricket Academy. However, he has been advised to avoid wicket-keeping to prevent more injuries.
Rahul had suffered a strain in his quadriceps during the first Test against England and went on to miss the remaining four Tests of the series.
“He has got the clearance from the NCA and he will join his IPL franchise on March 20 before they travel to Jaipur for their opening game against Rajasthan Royals on March 24. He has been told to avoid wicket-keeping in the initial matches and he can don the gloves after sometime. He will play as a pure batter in the first few games,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
LSG have Quinton de Kock and Nicholas Pooran, who can keep wickets for the franchise. Pooran is also the vice-captain of the team.
However, Rahul would like to don the wicket-keeping gloves after a while, as it is important for him if he wants to be a part of the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
“Rahul will not be considered among the top three batters for the World Cup. He can play as a wicket-keeper and bat at No.5 or 6 slot if he has a good IPL. But if he plays purely as a batter, than Rinku Singh is a far better option than him to play in the lower order. Rishabh pant could also return if he impresses with the bat,” a BCCI source privy to developments said.
