A hidden gem nestled amidst stunning natural beauty, the island of Kalymnos should be added to your travel bucket list. This picturesque Greek isle, located near Kos, was crowned the cheapest place in a survey that analysed over 4,500 package holidays across 15 European countries last year. 

Consumer champion Which? conducted a comparison of prices during the first week of August to identify the most affordable package holiday deal. They concluded that this charming Greek island offers the most cost-effective package holidays in Europe. Part of the Dodecanese Island group, this small paradise boasts secluded beaches and crystal-clear waters. 

Kalymnos is globally recognised as one of the best rock-climbing destinations. The island caters to climbers of all abilities, from novices to seasoned professionals, with a diverse range of climbing routes.

Climbing spots such as Grande Grotta and Panorama provide awe-inspiring views of the Aegean Sea. Other points of interest include museums, churches, and archaeological sites like the Castle of Chora and the Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos.

Kalymnos is an island teeming with activities, boasting 15 idyllic beaches such as the renowned Massouri Beach, Myrties Beach, and Kantouni Beach, each offering crystal-clear waters and breathtaking panoramas.

Visitors are also drawn to the Sponge Factory, a tribute to the island’s sponge fishing heritage. The Sea World Museum shines among its many cultural attractions, housing a private trove of nautical relics including shells, sponges, and corals.

Other notable museums include the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum, and the Maritime Museum. Attractions like the Castle of Chryssocheria, the Church of Christ, and Kefala cave add to the island’s allure.

Convenient travel options consist of direct flights from Athens to Kalymnos or flying to Kos followed by a ferry ride for those travelling from Britain.

Those lucky enough to discover this hidden gem have been utterly captivated by its natural splendour.

A TripAdvisor user gushed about Kalymnos village, describing it as “a wonderful place.”

They said: “It’s the typical image for a dream place in the Aegean/Mediterranean Sea. If you really want to enjoy it, go and walk the narrow streets and make a stop at one of the many tavernas of the port.”

Another traveller wrote: “Always a joy to come back here. One of the true authentic Dodecanese Greek islands in the East where you will find friendly people (go visit Stukas Taverna in Pothia! ) and you feel like you want to come back! Go!”.

A third reviewer highlighted the island’s appeal, penning: “Great place lovely churches and cheap shops to buy all advice you bring cash as it is a small island only one or two shops take card. Great people nice sideline to the beach so you can walk in the water across the sand.”
