“Performance matters in the end. I don’t care how you do it”: Ian Healy slams batting coach for Australia’s declining Test performance
admin June 30, 2025 ArticleAustralia won the opening Test against the West Indies by 159 runs, but their batting performance raised concerns. Australia managed just 180 runs in the first innings, and it was due to Travis Head and Beau Webster that they were able to set a target exceeding 300 after the second innings. The top order, including Sam Konstas, struggled, with the batter scoring just 3 and 5.
Konstas, who didn’t play in the WTC final against South Africa, was part of Australia’s below-par performance against the West Indies. Ian Healy criticised batting coach Michael Di Venuto for the team’s “regressing” performances, calling on players to take responsibility and improve.
“I tend to place more responsibility on the players than the coaches. However, as I’ve mentioned, the batting head coach of Australian cricket, along with every state batting coach, should be feeling the pressure, as there aren’t enough runs being scored across the nation,” Healy stated on SEN.
“Michael Di Venuto, a friend of mine who is both a good coach and a good person, has been in the role since mid-2021. During this period, the performance of our national team’s batting at the Test level has declined,” he continued.
Promoting Cameron Green has backfired, with the batter failing to perform in both the WTC final and the first Test against the West Indies.
Marnus Labuschagne was dropped, Steve Smith was injured, and Usman Khawaja hasn’t impressed, adding to the growing pressure ahead of the Ashes.
“To me, performance is all that matters. I don’t care how you do it or what makes it easier – just get it done. They’re not making it easy for themselves. Players need to handle their nerves better, it seems,” he added.
“They need to develop solid techniques and maintain balance, allowing them to make sound decisions consistently over long periods. Right now, we’re missing many of these key elements, and the lower order is left to deal with the pressure, either trying to recover the score or facing defeat. It’s just too difficult at the moment, we need to clear the minds of our top order,” he added.
