Things are not well between PCB and interim head coach Mohammad Hafeez, as following series’ defeats against Australia and New Zealand, the Pakistan Sports Ministry has advised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) against offering a long-term to Hafeez, who is also the current director of the side.
Hafeez assumed the role after Pakistan’s embarrassing exit from ICC World Cup 2024. Notably, the Zaka Ashraf-led board had submitted a long-term contract for approval to the sports ministry, but they replied suggesting PCB to continue with a short-term contract that ends after the T20 series in New Zealand.
A reliable source mentioned, “The contract was for a long-term period, but the board was told to just continue with the short-term arrangement with Hafeez, which ends after the T20 series in New Zealand.”
As per reports, PCB lured Hafeez to join the management on the pretext of a long contract. However, the ministry’s stance indicates a shift, particularly considering the team’s poor performance under Hafeez and the coaching staff. Pakistan suffered a 0-3 defeat against Australia and trail 0-3 against New Zealand in the ongoing five-match T20I series.
