Kinsale: The pretty seaside town in Ireland on one of Europe’s best road trips | Travel News | Travel
admin June 17, 2024 ArticleThe pretty little town on one of Europe’s best road trips is one of the ‘most colourful’ in Ireland.
Kinsale is an historic port and fishing town in County Cork. It sits at the mouth of the River Bandon and has a population of about 5,300.
It is considered among Ireland’s most beautiful towns with narrow cobblestone streets, 19th-century architecture lacquered in colour and sturdy-beamed old-world pubs.
The town is called Ireland’s food capital and is known for its restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Bastion, and holds a number of annual gourmet food festivals.
There are many other restaurants to enjoy, with a focus on seafood, as well as cafes and bars. The town also has lots of small gift and craft shops to explore.
Kinsale’s notable buildings include the 16th-century Desmond Castle (also known as the French Prison), the 17th-century pentagonal bastion fort on Castlepark peninsula, and a partially restored star fort of 1677 in nearby Summercove.
It evokes a pirate’s enclave and in fact, Daniel Defoe’s inspiration for Robinson Crusoe (Alexander Selkirk) set sail on his misadventure from the town’s port in 1703. There is also a secret beach to discover.
Those who have visited Kinsale have described it as a “gem” with “welcoming locals” and “food to die for”. Many said it was “picture perfect” with “beautiful views”.
Kinsale is also on the Wild Atlantic Way, a coastal road trip considered one of Europe’s best. It is 1,600 miles in length and divided into 14 stages along Ireland’s west coast.
Along the route are incredible sights including Mullaghmore Head, Baltimore Beacon, the Cliffs of Moher, Fanad Head, Slieve League, Keem Bay and more
Wild Atlantic Way has been called a “must-do trip” that is “well worth the journey”. Many said the name was accurate, with “wild and beautiful scenery” on Ireland’s “stunning coastline”.
Those wishing to visit Kinsale can get there by car via the N71, by bus from Cork or by plane landing at Cork Airport. There are a number of places to stay both in Kinsale and the surrounding area including hotels, B&Bs and holiday lets.
