Joe Root makes a big statement on his chances of breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s world record in Test cricket
Joe Root opened up on his chances of breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s world record of most runs in Test cricket. Root has been scoring runs consistently over the past few years and is amongst the top 10 run-getters in the format.
The 33-year-old hit his second consecutive hundred in the second Test against Sri Lanka with 103 runs off 121 balls on Day 3. He also became the leading century maker for England, going past Alastair Cook’s record of 33 centuries. He needs 96 runs to become England’s all-time highest run-getter in red-ball format.
He is in seventh place on the list of the leading run-scorers in the five-day format with 12,377 runs from 145 matches. He has a chance to dethrone Sachin from the top spot. He shared his opinion on the chances of becoming the new world record holder in Tests. According to him, he is not chasing any record and is just thinking about scoring runs for England.
“I am not going after any record as my focus is on scoring runs for England. However, scoring a hundred gives you a unique feeling. I don’t want to lie, but reaching hundreds is always good.
“I want to win Test matches for England. That’s the main target. If my hundreds can take the game in England’s favor, it is nice. I hope to be a part of more days like this,” he said.
Root needs 3545 runs to break Tendulkar’s record.
Sachin Tendulkar managed 15921 runs from 200 Test matches. Joe Root needs 3,545 runs to reach the top of the table. Given his form in the last few years, Root is likely to surpass Sachin. Joe has managed 4554 runs from 48 matches at an average of 56.92, with 17 centuries and 15 half-centuries since 2021.
After Sri Lanka, Root will play in another six Tests in 2024. England have a three-match Test series against Pakistan and New Zealand.
