According to Sky Sports, India’s premier bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, has decided to withdraw from the Test captaincy race. Reportedly, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are the top candidates for the job after Rohit Sharma’s retirement.
Rohit bid adieu from Test cricket on May 7, sparking considerable speculation that Bumrah could take over as captain. Bumrah has previously captained India in three Test matches, including one in England and two in Australia. India has defeated Australia in the series opener of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
According to Sky Sports, Bumrah doesn’t want to become the team’s skipper because of his workload management. His availability for all matches against the Ben Stokes-led unit is uncertain. He missed the white-ball matches against England and also the ICC Champions Trophy in after failing to recover from his back injury.
The national selection committee will prefer a candidate who can lead the team in all the matches. Both Gill and Pant are important members of the Test squad and the selectors are likely to meet next week to discuss the captaincy issue.
According to a report in PTI, Gill is on the verge of becoming the new Test captain, while Pant will be his deputy. In the IPL 2025, Gill has led the Gujarat Titans from the front.
