Pakistan’s jailed former captain, Imran Khan, is miffed with the performance of the Men in Green in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Pakistan, the defending champions and the hosts, were eliminated from the first round of the ICC tournament.
Pakistan is hosting a global event after 29 years but the Mohammad Rizwan-led team suffered an exit in six days. With New Zealand defeating Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, the door was closed for Pakistan. The sub-continent nation lost to the Kiwis and India in their first two games. This was the fourth time Pakistan failed to cross the first-round in the prestigious tournament, the previous being in 2002, 2006 and 2013.
“He (Imran Khan) is disappointed after Pakistan lost to India,” sister Aleema Khan told the media.
Pakistan will compete against Bangladesh in their third and final game at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
This is the third consecutive instance that Pakistan will not play in the second round of an ICC tornament. They failed in the previous two editions of the ODI World Cup. Pakistan suffered a first-round exit in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024.
Aleema said the 1992 World Cup winning captain also questioned the leadership qualities of the current PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. “Imran said cricket will be destroyed in Pakistan when favourites become decision-makers,” she added.
