India’s dream of securing a third Cricket World Cup title came crashing down on November 19, 2023, in a heart-wrenching final against Australia. Despite a strong performance throughout the tournament, India faced challenges with the slower pitch conditions in Ahmedabad and strategic missteps.
The middle order struggled, resulting in a modest target of 240 runs, with KL Rahul contributing a half-century. However, Australia’s Travis Head spearheaded a successful chase with a century, clinching their sixth World Cup title. Despite Virat Kohli’s stellar performance earning him the Player of the Tournament title, the loss left the Indian team and fans devastated.
Expressing the team’s disappointment, Mohammed Shami, who had made a remarkable mark in the World Cup with 23 wickets, spoke to PTI about the painful defeat.
“The entire nation felt let down. We gave our full effort to keep the momentum and clinch the final victory. However, it’s hard to pinpoint where things went wrong. It is tough to explain and is a very painful feeling,” he said.
Despite the team’s setback, Shami made history by becoming the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with an impressive 7/57 in the semi-final. His exceptional performance throughout the World Cup, totaling 23 wickets in six games at a remarkable average of 9.13, established him as a standout bowler in Indian cricket history.
