Team India’s stand-in captain, Smriti Mandhana, entered the record books during the series-deciding match against the West Indies on December 19 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Leading the team in Harmanpreet Kaur’s absence, she gave the Women in Blue a brisk start as the team posted 61 runs in the powerplay. The left-handed batter hit seven consecutive boundaries on the deliveries from Chinelle Henry and Deandra Dottin.
Maddhana amassed her fifty in 27 balls and broke Suzie Bates’ record. Overall, she scored 77 runs off 47 balls before Dottin got rid of her in the T20I. She has touched the 30th half-century mark in her T20I career and now holds the record for the most 50+ scores by a woman player in the slam-bang version of the game.
