Sunil Gavaskar has opined on Team India’s performance on Day 1 of the first Test against England. He thinks the visiting team should score 500-550 to put pressure on the English batters.
Shubman Gill-led India were 359/3 at stumps on Day 1, with the captain scoring an unbeaten 127. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant was on 65 runs. Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal amassed 101 runs and added 91 runs with his opening partner, KL Rahul, who posted 42 runs.
“India should look to score 500-550 runs in their first innings to put England under pressure. England have good batters, but the rival team feels pressure when you post 500-plus runs. The Indian captain and vice-captain have put the team into a strong position,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
“359 runs in a day is not a bad score, and many Indian teams in the past haven’t been able to achieve it. The openers laid the platform, and others capitalised on it in Leeds,” he added.
Ben Stokes’ decision to invite India to bat first after winning the toss backfired as the willow holders kept the scoreboard ticking at a good run rate.
India are in England for five Test matches, and the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the two retired cricketers, was not felt.
