Suryakumar Yadav was appointed Team India’s T20I captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format. Shubman Gill was also added to the leadership group as he was made vice-captain in white-ball cricket.
He could get the same role in Test cricket. The selectors haven’t named Rohit Sharma’s deputy for the Bangladesh series.
Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant were ignored for the vice-captaincy, with Gill getting the nod.
Former India cricketer Suresh Raina said that the BCCI will back Shubman Gill as the future T20I skipper if he performs well in IPL as a captain and guides his franchise to the title.
“Gill is the vice-captain of the Indian team. It shows someone is thinking about him. If he does well with the bat in IPl 2025 and leads the team to success, he is the future captain, and he will be the next superstar,” Raina said as quoted by PTI.
Gill was India’s captain in the five-T20I series against Zimbabwe, with the sub-continent team registering a 4-1 win. He also led Gujarat Titans in the 17th season of the tournament, finishing eighth in the table after five win matches in 14 league games.
