“I was crying for this for two years”: Virat Kohli recalls one of the most emotional moments of his life
Virat Kohli is currently playing the second Test of the three-match Test series against New Zealand in Pune. The veteran recently recalled one of the most emotional moments of his life. When he broke his century drought in September 2022, he cried while speaking to his wife, Anushka Sharma.
Kohli, who is 35 years old, has scored 80 centuries in international cricket and is second on the list of most tons. Only Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 100 centuries in international cricket, is ahead of him. Virat had to wait three years to record a three-digit mark after his Test hundred against Bangladesh in Kolkata in November 2019.
The much-awaited moment came when Kohli struck an unbeaten 122 runs off 61 balls in the Asia Cup match against Afghanistan in Dubai on September 22. In his conversation with Jatin Sapru, the legendary batter spoke about his feelings after ending his rough patch.
“When I spoke to Anushka Sharma, I was in tears. However, when I completed my hundred, I laughed a lot. I was crying about this for two years,” he said.
Virat struck 12 fours and six sixes during the Super 4 clash against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022. The Men in Blue posted 212/2, with KL Rahul also accumulating 62 runs off 41 balls. Afghanistan were restricted to 118/8 as Bhuvneshwar Kumar recorded bowling figures of 5-4.
Kohli dedicated the innings to his wife, Anushka, and daughter, Vamika. “I have been through a lot, and one person who puts things in perspective for me is Anushka Sharma. This hundred is for her and our daughter Vamika.”
Virat has scored 50 hundreds in one-day internationals, 29 in Test cricket, and one in T20Is. He retired from the shortest format after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy in the West Indies and the United States of America. Kohli was named the Player of the Match for scoring 76 off 59 balls in the final against South Africa.
