“I came with Arjun Tendulkar”: Prithvi Shaw recalls fond memories of the 2011 World Cup triumph at Wankhede Stadium
admin January 17, 2025 ArticleThe Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) kicked off its 50th-anniversary celebrations this week at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, marking the milestone with a grand felicitation ceremony. The event honored former captains of the Mumbai cricket team, and anticipation is building for another major celebration on January 19, where a gathering of both current and former cricket stars will come together to commemorate the occasion.
One player who has been reflecting on his time at the Wankhede is Mumbai’s opening batsman Prithvi Shaw. Shaw, who gained prominence for his remarkable performances, including playing a pivotal role in India’s U19 World Cup victory in 2018, shared his fond memories of the stadium. He recalled attending the 2011 World Cup final at Wankhede, where India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets to win the prestigious trophy.
Shaw vividly remembers the moment, as it left a lasting impression on him. “My first memory that I remember, and it’s for the rest of my life, was when I came here to watch the 2011 World Cup. I was 11 at the time, and my friend Arjun Tendulkar and I sat here to watch that game live. I can still recall the moment when we won and lifted the World Cup. What an experience. That was my first time,” he recalled.
“As children, we often dreamed of playing at Wankhede Stadium. Now, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mumbai Cricket Association, I believe everyone should join in the festivities. This celebration is for all the people of Mumbai. Please come on the 19th and be a part of this grand occasion,” he added.
The 2024 season, however, has been challenging for Shaw. He has struggled to make an impact in domestic cricket, facing ongoing disciplinary issues that have kept him out of the Mumbai XI, even leading to his removal from the Ranji Trophy squad during the current season. Additionally, Shaw’s stint with the Delhi Capitals ended in disappointment, as he was released by the franchise and failed to attract any bids during the IPL Auction in November. Despite these setbacks, Shaw’s passion for the game remains unwavering, and his experiences at the Wankhede will always be cherished as a pivotal part of his journey.
