Former off-spinner Erapalli Prasanna thinks that Ravichandran Ashwin might have been indicated by the management about his future with the team, which led to his retirement from international cricket. Ashwin, who is 38, took the call after the third Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Speaking to Rediff.com, Prasanna gave his verdict on the unexpected retirement of the spinner midway through the series. “I was surprised but it seems he was given some indication that he was no longer required, which might have forced him to quit the game,” he said.
The 84-year-old added that not being part of the Playing XI while touring abroad might have contributed to the decision. “He hasn’t got enough chances in overseas series and even in the ongoing tour of Australia, Ashwin played just one Test so far, and that might have played a role in his call.”
Prasanna, who took 189 wickets in 49 Test matches, called Ashwin the greatest spinner. “He is the greatest spinner of this era and had a magnificent track record for India after Anil Kumble. He is the last of the classical spinners of this generation along with Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.”
