Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly scolded bowling coach Morne Morkel for coming late during a practice session in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. According to the report in Times Of India, Gambhir, who is strict, was furious when Morkel came late for the net session, and he slammed the former South Africa pacer publically. A source told TOI that Morkel was unhappy with Gambhir’s behaviour and became reserved for the remaining part of the tour after facing Gambhir’s anger.
India suffered 1-3 defeat against Australia in the five-match Test series after which the BCCI held a review meeting. The Gambhir-Morkel incident confirmed that all was not well in the Indian dressing room.
“Gambhir is strict and he hit out at Morkel. The board was told that Morkel was a bit reserved after the incident. It is up to Gambhir and Morkel to solve their differences for the smooth functioning of the team,” a BCCI source told TOI.
Meanwhile, the debacle raised questions about the performance of assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate. The BCCI has urged the players to inform the board if these two have added anything new. Batting coach Nayar is reportedly under the scanner for failing to get the best out of the batters against the Pat Cummins-led team.
“Batting coach Abhishek Nayar failed miserably. The board has asked the players to give their feedback and the officials are not pleased with Ryan ten Doeschate as well. He lacks experience and his ability to contribute is being questioned,” the source added.
