Mohammad Kaif has identified Rishabh Pant as Rohit Sharma’s successor in Test cricket. Kaif asserted that the wicketkeeper batter should lead India National Cricket Team in the longest format of the game. Pant has been a top performer for India in the past few years. His innings have led the national team to victories.
Meanwhile, Rohit is under pressure after his failures in the three-match series against New Zealand. He was a walking wicket and his captaincy decisions were also surprising.
The selection panel recently named Jasprit Bumrah as Rohit’s deputy for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
Kaif suggested that Pant is the best option to become India’s leader after Rohit Sharma. He mentioned that Rishabh has already proved himself in Australia, England and South Africa.
“From the current Test team only Rishabh Pant is the contender to become captain. He’s a worthy successor of Rohit Sharma. He has played several match-winning knocks and proved himself in England, Australia and South Africa. Be it seaming or turning tracks, he bats freely,” Kaif said.
Pant was the highest run-scorer in the three-match Test series against New Zealand, and despite India’s 0-3 defeat, he was one of the positives for India.
“Rishabh Pant deserves to become Team India’s skipper after Rohit Sharma.
“He will retire as a legend in this format. We have seen improvement in his wicket-keeping. New Zealand were in trouble when he was at the crease. From the current set-up, Pant has the talent, experience and skills to replace Rohit in red-ball team,” he added.
