Jasprit Bumrah has led India in Test cricket and T20Is in the absence of regular captains. He is ready to captain the Men in Blue if given a chance. However, former Pakistan batter Basit Ali wants the speedster to concentrate on his bowling rather than thinking about captaincy.
Bumrah feels fast bowlers can become good skippers and gave examples of Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Pat Cummins, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.
Meanwhile, Ali mentioned that Kapil and Imran were given leadership responsibilities after they established themselves as all-rounders.
“Bumrah shouldn’t chase captaincy, and he is a top-class bowler and should focus on his bowling. He spoke about Kapil Dev and Imran Khan, who were successful captains because of their all-around skills. The two didn’t get captaincy when they got into teams as bowlers. This is a difference between a bowler and an all-rounder,” he said.
Basit Ali said that Australia’s fast bowler, Pat Cummins, is a successful captain. He, however, feels that there are only a few pacers who can achieve success as captains or coaches.
Bumrah played a crucial role in India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, taking 15 at an economy of 4.17.
He is currently on a break and maybe rested for the two-match Test series between India and Bangladesh.
