Former Indian player Anshuman Gaekwad passed away at the age of 71 after a prolonged battle with blood cancer. Gaekwad played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs, scoring 1154 runs with 2 hundreds. He accumulated 201 runs against Pakistan in 1983.
Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had sanctioned INR 1 crore for Gaekwad’s treatment. Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, had contacted Gaekwad’s family members to inform them about the board’s decision.
The apex body of the Indian cricket had expressed confidence in his recovery. Gaekwad’s situation was revealed by former India cricketer Sandeep Patil. Patil disclosed that Gaekwad was battling life-threatening disease for over a year.
Gaekwad informed him about his financial challenges. Dilip Vengsarkar spoke to BCCI Treasurer Ashish Selar, who agreed to help Anshuman.
Kapil Dev had urged the BCCI to help his former teammate. Kapil, Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad was raising funds for Gaekwad.
