Expert warns of one hidden airport rule that could stop you getting on flight | Travel News | Travel

Brits dreaming of sun-soaked getaways this summer could face unexpected disruption before they even reach the departure gate, thanks to a little-known airport security rule. Whilst most people might be worried about security queues or strikes making them miss their flights, your smartphone could ruin the trip. Travel experts WildPack American Summer Camps have warned that a dead phone could leave you disconnected and potentially bar you from boarding or even confiscate your device.

Travel expert Jamie Fraser explains: “Many travellers are unaware that airport security now operates under stricter guidelines regarding electronic devices. If security personnel cannot switch on your phone to conduct necessary checks, they have the authority to deem the device, or you, a security risk.”

The expert says that if your devices do not work when asked, you won’t be able to take them on the plane. Airport staff might ask you to prove your device works by turning it on. 

If your device is broken or not charged and you can’t turn it on when asked, you won’t be allowed to take it on the flight.

Travel advice on GOV.UK reads: “Make sure your electronic devices are charged before you travel. If your device does not switch on when requested, you will not be allowed to take it onto the aircraft.”

Most passengers won’t have to prove their devices work, but sometimes airport security might check randomly. Even though this rule has been around for a while, many travellers still don’t know about it.”

Jamie Fraser adds: “While it might seem extreme, these regulations are in place for everyone’s safety. 

“A non-functioning device raises suspicion and can lead to significant delays and potential denial of boarding. 

“In some cases, security might even confiscate the device for further inspection.”

To avoid any issues, you should make sure to charge your phone before you leave for the airport.

It’s also a good idea to pack a portable charger if you have one which is particularly useful if you’re taking a longer journey or expecting any delays. 

You may also want to take a paper backup of your boarding pass in case your phone dies.

Finally, make sure you know your rights – you should familiarise yourself with your airline and airport’s policies regarding electronic devices.
