Ex-cricketers slam Rohit Sharma’s defensive tactics in 1st Test

In a gripping turn of events during the 1st Test between India and England, Ollie Pope’s remarkable innings and Tom Hartley’s resilient partnership left former cricketers singing praises for the English duo while harshly criticizing India’s defensive tactics, particularly under Rohit Sharma‘s captaincy.

As Day 4 unfolded, Ollie Pope and Rehan Ahmed showcased their skills, with the latter’s innings cut short by Jasprit Bumrah. Despite England being 7 down with a lead nearing 150, the Indian team struggled to wrap up the remaining wickets quickly, allowing Pope and Hartley to form an impactful 80-run partnership for the 8th wicket.

Kevin Pietersen, the former England cricketer, expressed in the commentary that the Pope-Hartley stand “destroyed” India’s soul.

“This partnership shattered India’s spirit. England has positioned itself strongly. A lead exceeding 200 is a significant setback for India psychologically. Batting in the fourth innings is extremely challenging. There’s a reason behind teams avoiding chasing substantial totals in Test match fourth innings. It’s a tough task,” he said.

Former cricketers slam India’s defensive approach

Although Pope fell just four runs short of a maiden double century, his innings significantly bolstered England’s position. Former Indian cricketers Ravi Shastri, Murali Kartik, and Dinesh Karthik were critical of India’s body language and defensive tactics during this crucial phase of the game.

Ravi Shastri remarked on the listless body language of the Indian team, stating that they seemed under pressure. Murali Kartik echoed this sentiment, highlighting that Indian fielders displayed a drop in energy with every boundary scored by England.

“India’s body language has lacked energy since the Ben Foakes and Ollie Pope partnership. They’ve been waiting for events to unfold,” he said.

Dinesh Karthik specifically questioned Rohit Sharma’s defensive field placements, suggesting that while being defensive against Pope might be understandable, the approach remained questionable against Tom Hartley.

“India has been overly defensive. I can understand the need for defensiveness against Pope, but when facing Tom Hartley, Jadeja, and Ashwin, they should employ aggressive fielding, rather than having numerous sweepers,” he said.

“The body language is falling. This is unfamiliar territory for India. The home team appears to be feeling the pressure. They are unaccustomed to visiting teams piling on 400-plus runs in the third innings,” Ravi Shastri said.

England’s total of 420, driven by Pope’s magnificent innings, provided them with a lead of 230 runs. Although India managed to bowl England out, the visitors had already positioned themselves well in the match.

The home team faces an uphill battle as they are not accustomed to being in such a precarious situation, having not lost a Test series at home in the last 12 years, with only three losses out of 46 matches during this period.

The game completely tilted away from India’s favour due to Ollie Pope’s magnificent 196. The pitch further deteriorated on Day 4, making life difficult for batters.
