A stunning journey through the European mountains takes passengers between two major cities in less than a day. The Snälltåget train takes passengers on a scenic adventure, beginning in Malmö, Sweden and arriving at Innsbruck, Austria, a mere 22 hours later. It weighs in as the longest train journey by distance in Europe, taking passengers from the Swedish slopes to the Alps, with impressive views along the way.

Back on Track EU describes this as “probably the most relaxing, fun and eco-friendly way to get to your destination”. The incredible route boasts mountainous views for 1,720 kilometres, stopping at Austrian towns from which passengers can catch connections to ski resorts.

While the service does not offer full sleeper cabins, passengers do have ‘couchettes’ – comfortable compartments for the overnight ride. Reviewers have described the service as a ‘super cozy’ atmosphere, perfect for such a lengthy journey.

The two beautiful European cities each have something different to offer. In the coastal Swedish city of Malmo, wander through Lilla Torg, explore Malmohus Castle and visit the world famous Oresund Bridge which links Sweden and Denmark. Or for something a little different, why not visit the Disgusting Food Museum?

In Innsbruck, find unbeatable views of the Alps while riding the Nordkette cable cars, visit the Alpine zoo and take in the views of the beautiful St James Cathedral.

Despite the beautiful scenery, reviewers have warned of limited baggage storage on board, and Snälltåget has also come under fire for delays and cancellations. While UK rail passengers will likely be used to this feat, it’s something to consider on a tight holiday schedule.

The train also houses an on-board restaurant, ‘Krogen’. Menus include breakfast, lunch and alcoholic beverages, with prices around the 200 SEK/£15 mark. Snälltåget also operates a handy ‘Bring to your seat’ self-service checkout option for hot beverages and snacks.

Snälltåget operates a summer and winter service between Malmö and Innsbruck. The summer season runs only through July, so visitors will need to plan carefully to catch it. The train leaves Malmö at 3.40pm on each Friday in the month, returning from Innsbruck each Saturday at 6pm.

During the winter season, the service will run from December 19, 2025 through to March 15, 2026. Across two of Europe’s hotspots in prime ski season, this is the perfect excuse to take to the slopes for the festive period.

The trip will set you back 1999 SEK per person, each way. This equates to £154.06; perhaps pricier than a petrol tank, but arguably worth it for the magnificent views.
