England’s most ‘friendly’ seaside town crowned ‘best place to live’ in the UK | Travel News | Travel

Now that the weather is warming up, many people are looking for somewhere sunny and beachy to visit, but you don’t have to travel far as the UK has some incredible locations.

Falmouth is a delightful seaside town located on the southern Cornwall coast in England and sits on the River Fal, which the area is named after.

The cobblestone streets have many colourful shops to explore which line the waterfront and the bustling docks hold the largest natural harbour in the world.

However, Falmouth has been blessed by many beautiful golden beaches with the biggest being Gylly Beach, which has been described as one of the best beaches in the country due to its natural beauty, well-maintained toilets and showers, plus several bars and cafes to relax in nearby.

Falmouth was named this weekend as one of the “best places to live in 2024” by the Sunday Times who described the area as a “lively beachside town has something for everyone.”

It has also been named one of the “best seaside towns” in the whole of England by CN Traveler, who started the town’s artistic reputation makes it worth a visit.

They wrote: “The quantity of art students in Penryn means that this is a town where people make art: see it at the new grass-roots space.”

One of the first things any visitor to Falmouth should do is take a walk on the South West Coast path, which offers views of the surrounding countryside and rugged coastline.

Plus, it includes routes to walk to the beautiful Maenporth Beach, where the shipwreck of the historic Ben Asdale ship can be spotted offshore.

Anyone brave enough can explore the wreckage as the beach is known for its scrubs diving as well as kayaking and sailing.

A short ferry ride away is the beautiful Pendennis Castle on top of a hill which was first built in the 16th century and was constructed by Henry VIII.

The pathway surrounded by wildflowers is a breathtaking sight, but the castle itself offers a beautiful view of the coast, an interesting insight into Tudor history.

Explore the castle’s history or relax at the castle cage, which offers both local Cornish meals as well as dishes with a “historical Tudor twist.”

On the high street sits The Poly, a beautiful historic art venue built in the 19th century which has movie events, theatre performances, art galleries and even pottery classes so there is always something going on in this incredible building.

The shops and restaurants on Falmouth’s high street have something to offer everyone, from students looking for something cheap yet cheerful to surfers hungry after enjoying the waves.

One place to eat worth exploring is Beerwolf Books, a hidden gem in Falmouth which is both a bookshop and a pub. The pub is known for having all manner of drinks and a relaxing atmosphere.

On Trip Advisor, reviews started: “This lovely pub offers a great selection of books to buy but once you have done this you can sit and relax and enjoy an excellent well-kept real or craft ale.”

On Reddit, many locals have praised Falmouth and said they loved living in the town on the Cornwall forum. One user said: “Falmouth is a lovely town. My in-laws have lived there forever and its great! Great sailing scene and lovely walks.”

Another person said: “You’ll love Falmouth, lots of nice pubs, restaurants, Caribbean, Spanish, Indian, and of course fish ‘n chips!”

Someone else commented: “There’s is so much culturally to do, from film clubs, live music, to performance. There’s the nature aspect and everyone generally is really friendly.”
