Former Chennai Super Kings player Suresh Raina wants to see a new captain leading the franchise. He commented after CSK suffered a 9-wicket defeat at the hands of Mumbai Indians, their sixth in the Indian Premier League 2025. The total of 176/5 was never going to challenge MI at the Wankhede, and the fifties by Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav completed the rout of the visiting franchise.
Ruturaj Gaikwad started the season as the team’s captain, but his season-ending injury after the fifth game forced MS Dhoni to return as the skipper.
The 43-year-old has lost two out of three contests as a leader. Dhoni has passed his prime and is living on borrowed time in the tournament. Raina, who was with the Men in Yellow for more than a decade, is not convinced by the current leadership group.
“CSK need to take tough calls. They need a new captain and a wicket-keeper. Find a player who can lead the franchise. Almost all the main players are above 30, and it is high time to invest in the young players. Look at other franchises. “Priyansh Arya and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the two young cricketers, have impressed everyone,” Suresh Raina said.
“CSK’s graph is going down, and it is the right time to address the issues plaguing the franchise. Cricket has moved forward and you need to find new ways of winning matches,” he added.
Chennai’s investment in R Ashwin, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Rahul Tripathi in the mega auction has backfired. Ashwin and Tripathi have been the worst of the lot.
