Just one day before the IPL 2024 opening match, MS Dhoni made the surprising decision to step down as captain of the Chennai Super Kings and pass the role to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer questioned the timing of Dhoni’s announcement, which came after Gaikwad had already appeared at the captains’ photoshoot. The official announcement was made mere minutes later by CSK.
Jaffer believes that promoting Ruturaj Gaikwad to captain would have been a more sensible decision if Dhoni had already retired and was not still part of the team. He explained that with Dhoni’s presence and influence, any new captain would be tensed, as Dhoni may question or disagree with the new captain’s decisions. Jaffer feels that Gaikwad was the obvious successor for captaincy, but bringing him when Dhoni was still around would create an awkward environment.
“MS Dhoni’s retirement would have simplified matters for the new captain. His presence would complicate things, regardless of whether he agrees with the new captain’s decisions. A leadership transition to Ruturaj Gaikwad would have been smoother without Dhoni still involved with the team in an influential capacity.”
Ruturaj’s on being promoted to captain
Ruturaj expressed humility and gratitude after being selected for the captaincy role in the IPL, stating that with guidance from Dhoni and others, he would be free-minded going into the season.
“I am honored and excited to be named captain of this experienced team. With veteran leaders like Dhoni, Jadeja, and Rahane to offer guidance, I feel well-supported in this new responsibility. My main focus is to enjoy leading this talented group of players.”
Gaikwad’s journey as captain begins on 22nd March as CSK clash with RCB in the opening match of IPL 2024
