Cruise guests will usually visit a range of destinations as part of their holiday itinerary. They can choose to explore by themselves or book an excursion with the cruise company.

While some people like to be spontaneous, a cruise expert has issued a warning for guests about excursions.

Dave Mills, chief commercial officer of Iglu Cruise said: “Before your cruise departs, you’ll have a good idea of the destinations you’re going to visit during the voyage.

“You can book onshore excursions before you embark, meaning you’ll get to visit some of the most amazing attractions in the city or location you are visiting.

“Plus, you have the peace of mind of knowing that your activities are all planned with a trustworthy professional (and you won’t miss your port times).”

Cruise passengers will usually pay more for an excursion with the cruise line but they will have the comfort of knowing they’ll be looked after.

While cruise ships won’t usually wait for passengers who are late to the ship, the captain will try to wait for passengers who are delayed on an organised excursion

Dave added: “It’s also advisable to be wary about the length and activity level involved in an excursion.

“Some excursions can require lots of walking, often through narrow streets, steep hills or staircases, so be realistic about your own ability.”

Walking tours, hikes or adventurous activities may require a certain level of fitness to participate.

Cruise guests can contact their cruise line for advice if they’re concerned about the details of an excursion.

Dave said: “Make the most of your cruise by researching any particular excursions you may want to try in port.

“It’s best to do this a few months before your trip, as space on these can sometimes be limited.”

The most popular excursions may get booked up before the cruise even starts so it’s important to book early if there’s a must-do.
